  • Leave all buttercream at room temperature, you don’t want this to be cold

  • Keep the cake in the fridge or freezer for at least an hour before you plan to start decorating

  • Read through the instructions

Let’s Begin…

Start by gathering all the items you need and getting your decorating space organized. If it’s cold in your home and the buttercream is still a little stiff, pop it in the microwave for 4 or 5 seconds. This should be all it takes. You don’t want to melt it, but decorating a cake is much easier with a warm to room-temp frosting.

1

Take out your cake layers and heart template, unwrap your cake layers and keeping them together and stacked put them on a clean plate or cutting board. Center your heart template on top of the cake layers, using the center heart cut out as a guide for top and bottom of your cake. Using your sharp serrated knife making small cuts to being shaving off excess cake into the shape of a heart and discarding the excess cake scraps. Once your heart shape is cut out move your cake layers to the side. Take the top layer of cake with the heart cut out of the center and place it on a plate in the freezer for the moment.

2

Using your scissors, cut off about 1” of the tip of the flavored buttercream. Place your cake board in front of you to begin decorating. Put a dollop of buttercream on the middle of the board. this will be used to secure your first layer of cake to the board. The bottom layer of your cake is the full cake without a hole cut into it, this is the one you want to put down onto the board at this time.

3

Cut 1/2’’-3/4’’ off the tip of the vanilla buttercream, we recommend having the two buttercream dollops different sizes to make the cake more visually appealing so start out small with this one and you can cut off more later if you need!

4

Decide how you want to lay out your frosting dollops, do you want them to be random, or in a pattern like every other dollop or in lines?

5

Start by covering the edges of your cake to outline the heart shape then work your way into filling the middle, if you want an organic, random frosting pattern follow the below instruction:

Using the flavored buttercream starting around the edge of the bottom layer of cake dollop the buttercream leaving spaces of varying sizes to fill in with vanilla buttercream. Once you have the edge of the heart lined with dollops start filling in the middle with dollops to your liking, you can make a pattern or keep it organic with dollops of various sizes and flavors intermixed.

If you want heart patterned dollops follow these instructions

Using one flavor of buttercream, line the edge of the cake with buttercream dollops, then using the second buttercream create a second ring of buttercream around the inside working in rings toward the center

Once the cake is filled with buttercream dollops, put it in the fridge or freezer for at least 10 minutes. You want the frosting to set, you’ll know it’s ready when you can touch the tip of the buttercream dollops with your finger with medium pressure and the dollop is firm.

7

As soon as your buttercream is set, get the top layer of cake with the heart shaped hole from the freezer and carefully place it on top of your frosted bottom layer of cake lining up the edges of the top and bottom layers of cake.

8

You’re going to dollop frosting around the edges of the top layer of cake with one flavor then fill in the remaining space with the second flavor of buttercream.

9

Finally, you’re going to use your Valentine’s decorative toppings package to add decorative sprinkles and toppings to the cake and add your cookie topper!

You’ve decorated your Valentine’s Cake! Hooray!
